What is multimodal transport
Multimodal transport is the delivery of a single consignment by several modes of transport in various combinations. The aim is to give the customer the most favourable cost and an optimal transit time.
Typical combinations: sea and road, sea and rail, air and road. For the customer it is a single shipment handled by a personal manager.
The cargo does not necessarily have to be reloaded: the container is transferred whole from the vessel to a rail platform or truck.
What the freight forwarder does
Freight forwarding means organising the whole chain. We provide a full range of logistics services on a turnkey basis:
- selecting the route and modes of transport
- coordinating the stages and transshipments
- consolidation and storage in warehouses
- customs clearance
- tracking the cargo and keeping in touch with the customer
When it pays off
A complex route is justified when there is no direct service, or when it is too expensive or too slow. For example, for most of the journey the cargo goes by sea, and to the consignee’s warehouse by road or by rail.
If there are several suppliers, the consignments are first combined at a consolidation warehouse.
There are usually several route options. When calculating, we compare them on cost and transit time and explain the difference.

How much does multimodal transport cost?

How is multimodal transport different from ordinary transport?
In ordinary transport the cargo travels by a single mode. In multimodal transport it travels by several: for example, by sea and then by road. This lets us find a better combination of cost and transit time.
What is freight forwarding?
It is the organisation of transport from start to finish: selecting the route and carriers, coordinating the stages, documents, customs clearance and tracking the cargo.
Who looks after the cargo when it is transferred from one mode of transport to another?
We organise the transport at every stage: a personal manager coordinates the carriers, warehouses and transshipments. The terms of liability are set out in the contract.
How do I find out where my cargo is now?
Your personal manager, who handles the deal throughout, will tell you the status of the cargo.
Do you handle the whole delivery or only part of the route?
The main format is door-to-door, turnkey delivery. If you need a single stage, describe the task in your request and we will tell you whether we can help.
What information is needed for a quote?
The exact name of the cargo, gross and net weight, volume of the consignment, place and date of departure, place of delivery, and your preferences on method and transit time. We prepare the calculation within 1–2 days.
